Also recommended by The Spiritual Cinema Circle. (see Resources)Rated: ***for Content; I for Intensity Bend
It Like Beckham Drama/Comedy
2002. Rated PG-13. Netflix'
Description: A proper Indian girl shouldn't be spending her time playing
soccer. That's what Jess' family thinks, anyway. An ardent fan of British
soccer sensation, David Beckham, Jess (Parminder K. Nagra) wants nothing
more than to be on the field. And she has the talent to boot. But her
parents want her to be just like her sister Pinky, who cooks chapati like
a pro and wants a traditional Indian wedding. A sweet sports comedy with
plenty of heart. Lauren's comments: A fun, heart-warming, dare
I say, inspirational movie. I particularly enjoyed a glimpse into the
Indian and British cultures, including language :D Great movie! Whale
Rider Drama
2003. Netflix' Description:
Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. A Maori tribe must contend
with the distinctly non-traditional concept of having a female leader
when young Pai's (Keisha Castle-Hughes) twin brother -- the intended heir
to the throne -- dies during childbirth. Now, she must struggle to prove
herself. Stars Rawiri Paratene, Vicky Haughton, Cliff Curtis and Grant
Roa. Written and directed by Niki Caro. Seabiscuit Drama
2003. Jeff Bridges and a racehorse star in this fabulous, heart-warming,
life-affirming film based on the true life story of Seabiscuit - the too
small, too old, given up on race horse who stole the hearts of America
during the depression. This is a movie that will make you feel great -
about your Self, about others, and about life! Highly recommended! Catch
Me If You Can Drama
2003. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks are the two primary characters in
this fun, suspenful Steven Spielberg film. Based on the true story of
Frank Agnale who worked as a pilot, doctor, lawyer and stole 4 million
dollars all before the age of 19. Good enterntainment with a touch of
amazing! Enjoyable! The
Rookie Drama
2002. Rated G. Netflix'
Description: Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid) strikes an intriguing bargain
with the Texas high school baseball team he coaches: If they make the
playoffs, he'll try out for a pitcher position with a big league team.
The high schoolers hold up their end of the deal, and, against longer
odds than Satchel Paige faced during his legendary comeback, Morris makes
the team, fulfilling his lifelong dream. Lauren's Comments: Inspiring
movie based on the true story! Makes you believe in your dreams (again).
Right up there with Whale Rider, Bend It Like Beckham and Seabiscuit.
Recommended! Bruce
Almighty Comedy
2003. Rated PG-13. Netflix'
Description: Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) toils as a "human interest"
television reporter in Buffalo, N.Y. Despite his high ratings and the
love of his beautiful girlfriend, Grace (Jennifer Aniston), Bruce remains
unfulfilled. At the end of the worst day in his life, he angrily ridicules
God -- and the Almighty (Morgan Freeman) responds, endowing Bruce with
all of His divine powers. Question is, can Bruce improve on perfection?
Lauren's Comments: Great, funny movie with some wonderful humor
about our search for the Divine. A movie whose humor I believe us HSPs
and Empaths will particulary enjoy. One of my all-time favorites! Recommnded. The
Pianist Drama
2002 . Netflix' Description:
Famed Polish concert pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody, who won
an Oscar for the role) struggles to survive the onslaught of Nazi tyranny
during World War II in this autobiographical film. Already lauded at the
time for his talents as a musician, Szpilman spent those years holed up
in Warsaw, subsisting on scraps of food and barely able to stay alive.
Grace comes in the form of a second chance -- at music, at freedom, at
life. Lauren's Comments: It's a movie about war, what can I say.
The violence and atrocities are less than other WWII movies, but they
still exist. It is interesting to see how the pianist's talents bring
out the best in people during this horrible time. The intensity was tolerable
for me, although I covered my eyes a couple of times. Out
of Time Adventure/Thriller
2003. Netflix' Description:
Matt Lee Whitlock (Denzel Washington), chief of police in the small town
of Banyan Key, Fla., is respected by his peers and loved by his community.
But when Banyan Key is shocked by a double homicide, everything Matt Lee
thought he knew starts to unravel as he falls under suspicion. Racing
against time to solve the murders, Matt Lee must stay a few steps ahead
of his own police force and everyone he's trusted in order to uncover
the truth. Lauren's Comments: Twisting, turning, suspenseful movie.
A good action/thriller with limited violence. And if you like Denzel Washington,
you won't be disappointed. The
Hours Drama
2002. Netflix' Description:
This gripping drama visits three 20th-century women: the incomparable
Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman, in an Oscar-winning performance), hard
at work on her classic Mrs. Dalloway while battling depression in the
1920s; Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), an unsatisfied 1950s housewife who
finds solace in Woolf's novel; and Clarissa Vaughn (Meryl Streep), a modern-day
book editor who's losing her former lover to AIDS. Lauren's Comments:
Intriguing movie. Makes you think and appreciate our inner lives. Would
not recommend if you tend to match the energy of movies. Higher intensity
rating due to possible emotional effect. Pirates
of the Caribbean Action/Adventure
2003. Rated PG-13. Netflix'
Description: Johnny Depp plays Jack Sparrow, a charming, carefree
17th century pirate whose domain is the treacherous but exciting Caribbean
sea. When a rival pirate (Geoffrey Rush) pillages the coastal village
of Port Royal and kidnaps the governor's (Jonathan Pryce) daughter, Elizabeth
(Keira Knightley), Jack decides to help Elizabeth's love, Will (Orlando
Bloom), save her. But the mission isn't quite that simple or straightforward.
… Lauren's Comments: Great special effects and cast of characters
including Johnny Depp who plays an outrageous pirate.. An adventurous
tale. Lots of ocean scenes - always good for me. Quite a bit of fighting,
but it wasn't over the top, nor gruesome. Very enjoyable! Lost
in Translation Comedy 2003. Netflix' Description: Two Americans -- the very young wife (Scarlett Johansson) of a photographer and a washed-up television star (Bill Murray) in Tokyo for a TV commercial shoot for whiskey -- meet and end up spending a weekend hanging out together on a "soul-searching mission." Sofia Coppola directs from her own script. Giovanni Ribisi and Anna Faris co-star. Lauren's Comments: Intriguing movie. You're not sure where it's going and it surprises you because it doesn't go where most movies do. Fun and interesting. A nice change. Rated: *** for Content; I for Intensity The
In-Laws Comedy
2003. Starring Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks. Funny movie about the
family dynamics created between two families when their daugther and son
decide to get married. Enjoyable and entertaining. GoodFellows Drama
2003. Movie about the mafia. Intense and Violent. Not recommended for
sensitive souls. Analyze
That Comedy
2003. Billy Crystal and Robert DeNiro, always a great combination, star
in this sequel to 'Analyze This'. Billy Crystal plays a psychiatrist whose
is forced to continue treatment on the mob boss played by Robert DeNiro.
Some good moments, but in my opinion, not as good as the first movie.
A couple of scenes of perceived violence, although it's kept a minimum.
